Dreading the Keystone XL Decision
Obama at Soylendra plant, May 2010 |
It's been a rough season for all of us ex-tree-huggers-for-Obama. As of the end of August, the US has had a record-breaking 10 weather catastrophes, but Obama has shown himself uninterested in articulating to the people the connection between these events and anthropogenic climate change. The perverse and outrageous prosecution of Tim DeChristopher culminated in a two-year sentence in the federal penitentiary. New Wikileaks cables show that the State Department is bullying recalcitrant allies and trading partners into accepting Monsanto's genetically modified foods, against the wishes of their citizens. Early in September, Obama overruled the EPA and cancelled the new smog regulations which reflected current science- a gift to polluters which is estimated will condemn some 12,000 Americans to an early death.
Gene Karpinski, the president of the League of Conservation Voters said, "This is a huge win for corporate polluters and huge loss for public health."
Meanwhile, Obama's much-touted poster child of a new energy economy- and recipient of a half billion dollars in loans under the stimulus program- solar panel manufacturer Solyndra, declared bankruptcy and closed house, terminating 1,100 jobs. Apparently they couldn't compete with the Chinese. So much for our new economy.
So what are the odds Obama will stop the Keystone XL pipeline, already approved by Hilary Clinton's State Department? Not good.

Now, I feel like a sucker."
